NL Review!! Is Naira Marley’s “Drug Test” Going To Be Another “Soapy” On The Streets?

Published by on August 10th, 2021.

Naira Marley’s high status on the streets has become indisputable, for a while now.

These days, the Marlian Records boss, who just happens to be one of the best-selling artists of this era, walks around with a drug lord kind of exuberance. He has reached a level where he doesn’t have to tell anyone he’s rich or that he’s good at this music thing. As if that wasn’t already obvious!

Based on all the things he’s done in the industry, Naira Marley’s unprecedented rise to the top was only right. But he’s yet to do anything that touches his iconic 2019 run, which started from his “Am I a Yahoo Boy” single with Zlatan and led to the release of his debut project, “Lord of Lamba.”

It’s gotta be hard to top that, really, because in between that, he did two of his best songs, “Soapy” and “Mafo.”

Mafo” was an absolute banger. Produced by superstar producer, Young Jonn, the concept of the song is madness. If there’s ever a “conscious” NM, that’s gotta be it. The song was even up for Best Street Song at The Headies earlier this year, and it deserved it.

Soapy,” on the other hand, was peak Naira Marley. That was the song that gave him the wave he rode all through 2019. He had just come out of jail, and it was time to wow the streets with a ‘comeback’ jam. He did it. Frankly, if not for the “Soapy” era, he might not be as big as he is today.

Yeah, well, it’s been a long time since “Soapy” and Marley is already in need of a banger that can capture the heart of the people on the streets once again. Is this new jam, “Drug Test” going to be the next big thing since “Soapy”?

For one, “Drug Test” retains almost all of the elements that make a Naira Marley song a banger. There’s the uptempo beat. It’s gotta be 130 BPM or something because it’s fast-paced; just the kind Naira Marley rides effortlessly.

Then there’s the conceptual framework that binds together most of his songs. The idea is always simple, he’s either talking about drugs, sex, or how he’s the king on the streets. Sometimes, he does it simultaneously, layering the themes on each other with a storyline that’s not really hard to follow if you’re really listening.

Drug Test,” is specifically about a woman Naira Marley is trying to con into having sex with him by telling that he’s got a prescription for “sex in the morning, sex in the evening.” He goes on and on, using vulgar explicit lines that are not exactly street slangs or anything, bouncing on the Rexxie-produced track, as the percussions dance along with him.

On a normal day, this is a good Naira Marley song. But it’s nothing special, it’s not that great. Perhaps the uptempo is going out of style because Marley’s best songs in a while have been somewhat mid-tempo. Think of the even more vulgar “Coming” or the amapiano “Koleyewon.”

Drug Test” has the same problem songs like “Chi Chi” and “Idi Oremi” have. The songs are good enough and can turn up a dance floor, but they’re not the kind of stuff anyone wants to keep on their playlist, especially because of the kind of music that’s currently trending in the industry.

The industry’s tempo has slowed down. Naira Marley might also wanna chill with the Rexxie beats and try something different, or we’ll keep getting generally underwhelming songs like “Drug Test.”

Rating: 5/10
